Holbein in England November 27, 2006

This Saturday I ventured up to London to meet with friends and visit the ‘Holbein in England‘ exhibition currently staged at the Tate Britain. Holbein was Henry VIII’s court painter, so many of his works are of the Tudor family or court figures. The detail, especially in the fabrics, and as I was with archaeologists, we spent a lot of time looking at fabrics and objects, is incredible. You can almost feel the brocades and velvets. Highlights for me included the pictures of Erasmus and the preparatory sketch for the Moore family portrait. The exhibition is on until January, so if you are in London, go.

At the moment, my garden and plants are sorely neglected, but amazingly, my brugmansia or angel’s trumpet has flowered! Please don’t ask me why it came into bud in October and so had to be rescued er the frosts came, but it is a cheery sight near the front door. The flowers are strongly perfumed and so have a tendency to stink the flat out though.

The winners were: Chris Farren and Jessica Davies (sabre); David Mansour and Emanuel Martine (foil); Jon Willis and Corinna Lawrence (epee). Wales won the rugby against the Pacific Islands 38-20. Both gesta and myself love books, although our tastes are quite different. How we store books is also different; I am a devotee of the FAFSFS (First Available Flat Surface Filing System) – my office at work is absolute carnage. gesta, on the other hand, once worked in a library; her System actually deserves capitalization and is far too complex to explain here, even if I could. Worryingly it would seem that gesta is not alone…

The best fencing event on the domestic calendar in terms of quality of fencing, fantastic organisation and good company. I am rather late in posting about this event which took place in mid-October, but I shouldn’t let it pass entirely without notice. (more…)
Independent learning vs contact hours November 3, 2006

Following on from my recent post about independent learning, a recent survey reported by various bodies including the BBC and the Guardian has brought the concept to a wider public. Shock horror! It would seem that students at different universities doing different subjects have different work rates. (more…)
